MEDIA CONVERSATIONS

Why Talk to Tom?

Tom Sykes has spent much of his life moving between music, movies, television, business, writing, and documentary filmmaking, usually without following the route he originally intended.

His book, A Long Hard Road, grew out of that experience. It’s a story about dreams, detours, failure, persistence, and why some dreams remain worth carrying even when they don’t turn out the way you imagined.

Along the way, Tom has built a career in the entertainment business, written and recorded original music, made documentaries about Virginia history, and discovered that some of the best stories are the ones that didn’t seem particularly important while they were happening.

Short Bio

Tom Sykes is a Virginia songwriter, musician, author, and documentarian whose creative life has crossed music, film, television, and the entertainment business. During his career, he held executive positions with companies including Showtime Networks and helped build and turn around entertainment businesses before eventually returning his attention to the things that started the whole journey: writing songs and telling stories.

His recent work includes the book A Long Hard Road, original Americana music, and documentary films exploring Virginia history, including 469 Miles: Building the Blue Ridge Parkway, which was selected for broadcast by public television. Much of his work returns to the same territory: dreams, persistence, wrong turns, second chances, and what happens when life doesn’t follow the plan.
